Narrated drive out of New Orleans and along the shores of Lake Pontchartrain to visit two plantations on both banks of the Old River Road: our Driver-Guide prepares you for a pilgrimage back in time to the Antebellum South.
A scenic crossing of the Mississippi River on a high suspended bridge, then a short ride upriver brings you to St JOSEPH PLANTATION, a Creole style family-owned working sugar cane plantation since 1877! Your tour guide will lead you through the detailed lives of generations of Creole owners and their families, both their triumphs and their tragedies. After visiting the Manor home, explore original slave cabins, a blacksmith's shop and the schoolhouse.
A short ride upriver brings you to HOUMAS HOUSE PLANTATION.
Before your guided mansion tour, refreshing Mint Juleps will be available for purchase.
Experience the southern splendor of this "Sugar Palace" when your tour Guide leads you into 16 rooms filled with period antiques and Louisiana artwork. Upon completion in 1840, Houmas House was the crown jewel of Louisiana's River Road, with its heroically columned greek revival exterior, topped by a belvedere that surveyed the oak alley leading south to the sweeping bend in the river and miles and miles of cane fields to the North and East.
Enjoy the breeze off of the Mississippi River and stroll the grounds through the shadows of ancient oaks.
